In this edition of Through The Arsenal Gates Glenn O'Kray interviews Rick Goward, former music instructor and band leader at HFC. Glenn opens the conversation by asking Rick about growing up and how he got involved in music, we learn about his early days playing the trombone and other musical instruments. Rick talks about the various bands he has led over the years and the many interesting places they visited and performed at, including Carnegie Hall and many places overseas. We learn that Rick occasionally played as a substitute band member on the Tonight Show, and worked with Aretha Franklin in his early days. Mr. Goward tells us about the many students of his that have gone on to become teachers as well, and that many former students come back to participate in band activities. Mr. Goward tells us about several opportunities he had for teaching along the way, and what led to his decision to become an instructor at HFC (formerly HFCC). As the conversation closes, we learn about Rick's friendship with former Dearborn Mayor Michael A. Guido and his involvement with The Big Band. He offers praise for Mayor Guido's vision and high standards of the theater at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center.
